COMMENTS: The drama horror mystery film "Hereditary" explores themes of death, loss, grief, guilt, trauma, mental illness, secrets, lies, the paranormal, possession, Satanism, dysfunctional family relationships and seances. These dark and sinister themes are also complex and mature, and are presented with a strong sustained sense of threat and menace, underscored by sustained suspenseful low frequency sound, with the apparent intention to scare, discomfort and unsettle the audience, as justified within the horror genre. Themes and the way in which they are presented, are likely to be confusing, upsetting, disturbing and distressing to emotionally immature children under the age of 16 years, who may suffer psychological and emotional harm. For example, the scene of Charlie’s death as described below is extremely inappropriate for emotionally and cognitively immature children under the age of 16 years who are likely to be disturbed by them. Enhanced audio-visual effects of the cinematic format, and dark lighting in the theatre, contributes to the strong cumulative impact through elements of horror and violence, and the sense of threat and menace.
